December Wine Club: Small Grower Champagne Tasting Thu, Dec 12, 2019 — 6:00PM
The Champagne region in France is dominated by a handful of brand names we know well, such as Veuve Clicquot, Taittinger, and Moet & Chandon. These négoçiants & cooperatives, who only own about 12% of the vineyards in champagne, produce 80% of the total output. They bring to market a mass produced commodity, a Champagne made in a “house style.” By contrast, Small Growers may purchase only 5% of their fruit, and handcraft their limited quantities of Champagne from individual villages and parcels where the inherent qualities of the vineyards are wonderfully expressed in their wines. About a century and a half ago, Terry Theise assembled a remarkable portfolio of these small grower Champagnes. Michael Pare of L’eft Bank wine company will present to us eight of these selections.
Price is $35 per person for a single session, and $225 for the entire season, which includes the annual wine dinner on Thursday, April 9. All sessions begin at 6 PM, and take place on the second Thursday of each month.
