May 18-May 19, 2017

Travel with the Madison Club to historic Springfield, Illinois to experience the life of Abraham Lincoln – his rise from humble beginnings to the 16th President of the United States during one of the most turbulent times in American history.

Our trip to Springfield will include tours of the following historic sites:

The Lincoln Presidential Museum & Library: An EXPY award-winning museum for its state-of-the art experiential exhibits, this museum has become the best-attended of all the Presidential libraries since its opening in 2005 and is one of the most studied new museums in the world. Designed, created and produced by BRC Imagination Arts, the museum combines priceless historical artifacts with BRC's innovative, contemporary storytelling technologies. Visitors are offered an engaging, emotional and educational experience throughout.

Lincoln Home National Historic Site: A glimpse into the only home Lincoln ever owned; his residence with Mary for more than 15 years during their life together in Springfield. Our guided tour will showcase this fully-restored Greek Revival home and explore the rise of Lincoln as a lawyer and politician and his 1860 campaign for President.

Lincoln’s Tomb (Oak Ridge Cemetary): An up-close look at the Lincoln Monument, erected to preserve the memory of Lincoln's selfless efforts to preserve the United States. The site marks the final resting place of Lincoln’s remains.

Other trip highlights include:

The Dana Thomas House: Frank Lloyd Wright’s first “blank check” commission, the Dana Thomas House was commissioned for a Springfield family. This exquisite home features 35 rooms and 12,000 square feet of living space spanning 16 varying levels. The home contains a large collection of original Wright art glass and furniture and is a brilliant showcase of craftsmanship. The best preserved and most complete of Frank Lloyd Wright’s early “Prairie” houses.

The Old State Capitol Building: The site of candidacy announcements by Abraham Lincoln in 1858 and Barack Obama in 2007.

The Sangamo Club, a reciprocal club to the Madison Club, will host the group for dinner the first evening. Illinois State Historian, Samuel Wheeler, will join us to present “To the Kindness of These People, I Owe Everything’: Abraham Lincoln and Springfield, Illinois.” Dr. Wheeler serves as the historian of record for the state’s 56 historic sites and serves as the Director of Research, Collections, and Library Services at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

Trip includes coach bus transportation, overnight accommodations at the Hilton DoubleTree, all site admission fees and most meals, including dinner at the Sangamo Club. Due to tour size limitations, this trip is limited to 16 participants.
